Pink Floyd introduced their new composition Eclipse: A Piece For Assorted Lunatics at the beginning of 1972.  This was played in two different formats during that year, before finally maturing into the album release in March, 1973 of Dark Side Of The Moon.  The first format included a purely instrumental version of “On The Run,” “Speak To Me” was instrumental with a pre-recorded tape of a heartbeat, and “The Mortality Sequence” was a series of pre-recorded tapes that was played in place of “The Great Gig In The Sky.”  Sometime in the middle of 1972 “The Mortality Sequence” gave way, and for the last half of the year the composition was all instrumental.  In 1973, the band took backing artists on the road with them as “The Great Gig In The Sky” became a vocal as well as instrumental track, “On The Run” became a pre-recorded tape track, and “Speak To Me” gained additional pre-recorded tapes of vocals (‘I've been mad for fucking years……But you have to explain why you are mad……’).
